Sunday (day 4) Independence Day ! Trip to Piraeus

Sunday 25 March :  National Holiday - Independence Day !

After a late breakfast at 9am we bought a day ticket for 4,5 € and took the metro from Monastiraki to Piraeus.

We found our bus  51 which should take us around the peninsula but it took us back to the Port terminal first .

Back to Passalimani where we waited in vain for the Trolleybus to Kastela






We walked to the smaller bay Microlimano.








After having a drink from a very high terrace with beautiful sight over the bay, we walked via the Akti Dilaveri street (along the river) to the tramstation.























We took the tram (line 3) to "Voula"(southern suburb of Athens) why runs along the coastal zone, and from there we returned on line 2 to "Syntagma" 
We had a last glance of the guards in their "holiday"outfits.

We then took the metro back to Monastiraki

We  decided we still had time to go up to the  Lycabette Hill (Lofos Lykavittou)  and the (church) Agios Georgios

We walked to Kolonaki and further to climb (69 steps) to the Teleferik who would take us to the top of the hill.

For our last dinner we decided to go back to Oineas, where we were treated like royalty.

Saturday (day 3) : Akropolis Museum - Keramikos - Kentriki Agora - El. Venizelou

Saturday 24 March After an early breakfast at 8am, we set out to visit the 'Theatro Dionissiou' (lower part of the Acropolis) and the new museum. We first paid a visit to the small Orthodox church   Agios Dimitrios , in front of our hotel. Our walk took us (again) along the  Hadrian Library, the Roman Agora and the Plaka , after which we took the climbing small streets, which Mieke and I took in the opposite direction Friday morning. The theatre was built at the time when 'drama' or 'theatre' was first being created. It's thought that the first drama was presented by Thespis in about 530 BC (which is where we get the word 'Thespian'). These dramas were probably performed in the Agora. The cult of Dionysus was brought to Athens in the 6th C BC, and the threatre was built as part of the temple precinct. In the 5th C BC major works of theatre were performed. Thursday (day 1) : Arrival - Friday (day 2) : Akropolis - Agoras - Syntagma (Change of the Guards)

After meeting in Vienna in 2016, a citytrip to Krakow in 2017, we choose Athens for this years citytrip, hoping that we might have some mild weather after this cold winter. Thursday 22 March Train at  8h10 via Ghent (Mieke joined) arrival  Zaventem 9uh35 Aegean  vlucht A3621 at  11u50  ETA Athene 16u00 (local) = 15u Belgium Flight from Vienna (and France) were cancelled due to strikes.   Kate was re-booked for next day.
